Dressed in M1940 Stahlhelm, M36 Feldbluse, M36 Langhosen and Marschstiefel, with standard field gear including belt and buckle, Y-strap, entrenching tool, bayonet, bread bag, field bottle, gas mask, gas cape, A-frame, A-frame bag, mess tin, zeltbahn and magazine pouch. Arming himself with 9mm MP 40 submachine gun, the Obergefreiter earned his rank in the Battle of France.
Proud owner of Infanterie-Sturmabzeichen (Infantry Assault Badge – Silver), Nahkampfspange (Close Combat Clasp – Bronze), Eisernes Kreuz 2. Klasse (Iron Cross 2nd Class) and Eisernes Kreuz 1. Klasse (Iron Cross 1st Class), the last being awarded after his fifth injury during action together with Verwundetenabzeichen (Wound Badge 1st Class)
